Books Read in 2022/ haven't finished

Here we are at the end of another year! As I look through my books and read list, I can't help but marvel at how fast time has gone. My year of reading books seems shorter than ever, though I've accomplished so much. My year in unfinished books, however, is much more prolific. I'm wondering what that says about me right now. Maybe it's because I'm trying to do too much.

However, here it is. The books are finished (read), and I still need to finish them.

My New Year resolution for 2023 is to provide commentary on everything I've read. I'm not a big Goodreads reviewer. I'll click the stars rather than leave a detailed review. I'll post my thoughts here and on my Instagram (because that is a thing...)

(again, for the one-millionth time in my life. It's a comfort book. I usually pick up a Harry Potter book whenever I'm feeling stressed or anxious in my life. I've done this since I was in middle school).

Books started but haven’t finished in 2022:

January:

Hell House by Richard Matheson

Sigh…I read up until the horny ghost coerced (pressured to the point of it feeling like rape) one of the main characters into sex. I just can’t even. I don’t care if this was written in the 1970’s. Like, are you serious? Anyway, it annoyed the shit out of me.

February:

The Searcher by Tana French

To slow in setting up the hook.

March:

The Last Plague by Rich Hawkins

How many times can one read the word mewling before shattering your suspension of disbelief? Serious... I only have about an hour of reading in this book. I’m unsure if I’ll ever get back to it. I can't relate to any of the characters, and I don’t care if they make it or die.

April:

Within the Woods by Tony Urban

Couldn't relate to the characters and didn't feel like following them around.

May:

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

I started this book because the movie was about to come out, and so many people on the internet were freaking out about Taylor Swift endorsing the book and the drama behind the author. Plus, it's set in my home state of NC. I had high expectations, with so many people being so vocal. Just shows that any press is good press.

I started it, but I only got a little far. The flash forward was intriguing, but then Owens jumps into the main character's past, and it begins to meander... I confess I was reading this in the bathtub and fell asleep. I dropped the book in the bathtub. I haven't picked it up since it aired, even though I brought it back to Finland. Now it's collecting dust on my nightstand.

A lot of my friends have read it, said they liked it, and that it was easy for them. I would like to finish this book before I watch the movie, which I still haven't done. So, hopefully, I can manage that.

June:

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

I'll pick this book back up. The first few chapters were interesting, and I liked the world-building she did. The book series also seems incredibly popular. However, there is something about Schwab's diction/writing style that I have to force myself through. It nags at me like an itch I can't reach.

Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune

At the moment I began this book, I felt like I wasn’t in a good headspace for death…and all the sorrow surrounding it. I will pick it up later because I did like all of the characters and the world-building.

July:

Children of Night by Dan Simmons

Got to chapter 6 before I set it down. I was hoping for something different. I absolutely loved Summer of Night. I have read it twice, and I was even thinking of picking it up again. I was hoping for something similar. I’m not really interested in Dracula being a capitalist or whatever. Again, maybe I’ll pick it back up if I’m in the right mood.

The Wicked King by Holly Black

I’ll probably pick this up later in the year, but Jude’s angst is getting on my nerves right now. Hurry up and get together already.

August:

The Viscount Who Loves Me by Julia Quinn

Hmm, I’m pretty close to the end of the novel. But it feels like there isn’t enough…sex and the drama feels a bit off. I will probably finish before the month, though.

Nope, still need to finish it.

September:

The Midnight Club by Christopher Pike

I picked this up because the trailer for the new Netflix show looks right up my alley. However, when the kids started their “stories’ the stories themselves fell flat, and I just didn’t care anymore. I was led to believe the kids would tell scary or horror stories, and they ended up just being not… Will probably watch the Netflix show, though.

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

Usually, I would have devoured this. I AM A HUGE STEPHEN KING FAN, and I know I’ll probably still continue reading because I’ve heard amazing things. But the story is just taking too long. Like, cool, cool, I get that you like the dog. The dog is cute. I love my dog. But hurry up to the action and the actual story.

The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton

I only bought this because of the Title. I made it to chapter two, but it didn’t hold my attention as I was expecting.  I probably won’t finish.

October:

The Wicked King by Holly Black

Sigh again…. I just hate Jude. I hate all of the supporting characters except Cardan for some reason. It just feels like Jude makes stupid decisions just for the sake of the plot. Everything she does doesn’t feel natural; it's just plot-based. And there are no satisfying moments, no fun. I know I must force myself to finish to know what happens. But uuuggghhhh, it’s going to be complicated.

 November:

The Near Witch by V.E Schwab

Again, it's the writing style and the slow pacing. I want to finish it, though! The premise is everything that I love in a story.

 December:

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

Finally, I made it to the other world. I'll finish it in the new year.
