Thoughts On Why I Write Non-traditionally Published Short Fiction
My goal is to get published. This has been my dream ever since I was twelve and I'd just finished consuming the first three Harry Potter novels. The wait began for Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire and I was in agony. I needed these stories! I needed Harry! This was my foray into literature and into writing my own work. I had an incredibly over active imagination, probably from all of the daydreaming I did, and now that could be funneled into terribly spelled stories; hurrah!
Whenever I get into a writing slump and burnt out on what I'm currently working on, I'll usually write a fun short story to help me stay motivated. Most of these aren't publishable, but I think they're entertaining and fun, so I'll put them up here on my blog. At least they'll maybe get read. This is why I love writing! The freedom to express yourself and have something to share with people.
Writing these small short stories, or even flash fiction, benefits me tremendously. I get to write different things, try out new writing styles, genres, and point of view. I'm able to refocus my attention back onto my longer works and keep plugging away. I can type out an idea that I know won't be a substantial work, play with it, post it on this blog, call it a day, and then get back to what I view as more important to me and my eventual goal.
This blog has become cathartic to me. Being able to write what I want and not have to stress over submissions and agents and editors has been a breath of fresh air. I hope this also helps others!
So happy writing.
