Book Review: Redshirts by John Scalzi

I just finished listening to Redshirts on audible last night while trying to complete a puzzle with my husband. The puzzle is still uncompleted, though, we're getting there. But I've got to say that I loved this book. My husband and I are huge Star Trek fans: TNG, DS9, Voyager, the original movies, plus TNG's. We've watched them and re-watched them all. So sitting down and listening to Wil Wheaton narrate was an entertaining and fun way to spend a few days during quarantine (yes, Covid-19 is still plaguing the world and I am starting to go batshit with cabin fever).
The meta-ness of this book! I love it, I love it, I love it. I was laughing out loud so much during this novel, it truly lifted my spirits, and now I just want everyone to read it so you can feel as good as me. No wonder it won the Hugo. When I wasn't laughing, I was grinning, I just couldn't contain my joy. It's the same emotion I get when watching Galaxy Quest, but this was in novel form. Side note-if you haven't watched Galaxy Quest, Go Watch Galaxy Quest, then come back and read Redshirts. Or read Redshirts, and then watch Galaxy Quest, whichever is good for you.
You can tell that John Scalzi had a great time writing this novel. After looking him up, he apparently only wrote it in five weeks, then sent it in to his editor. I'm obviously incredibly envious.
No, spoilers this time. Just go read it if you want a mood lift and you really like sci-fi or Star Trek.
