July So Far
I've done a lot since my last post. I read Wuthering Heights, talked about it with my book club. We had some amazing discussions about this book. It's definitely up there in the most rememberable books that I have ever read. I hated the characters, but rooted for them anyways (these are the type of characters that you love to hate) and I empathized with them just the same as if they were real. I became quite passionate about this book and had a lot of things to talk about. Wuthering Heights is definitely up there in my favorite books of all time and I can't BELIEVE I'd never read it before! I missed out. But now I'm caught up and can proudly shove it in other peoples faces, Hooray.
Next I started Camp Nanowrimo and am barely keeping up (except for 4th of July and the 4th's Weekend). But I'm finally writing again and making progress on my revisions.
On the 4th of July I binged all of Stranger Things season 3 and was blown away with just how much more I became obsessed with the show! I loved everything about it. It also made me so incredibly homesick that I just wanted to back up my European life and move back and start teaching again/ living in a actual house and settling down. I taught middle school and I absolutely love this age group. 8th grade is such a funny time for kids and they're really fun to be around.
Oh the power of nostalgia: I was born in the late 80's and even though the show it set in the mid 80's its all just felt so familiar with my childhood. Walkie-talkies, no cell phones, mother's listening in on your phone calls, riding bikes around everywhere, the big community pool, haning out at the mall because there's nothing else to do; these are all synonymous with how I grew up. Being a horror movie buff I got most of the references and just cried/laughed at the duet that Dustin and Suzie sang! OH MY GOD, THE NEVERENDING STORY! EEKK that was the best thing ever! I have so many things that I can say about this show and I have already talked to my friends and family about it exhaustively. The last thing I'm going to say about it is: the writing was phenomenal! And I loved how all of the female characters were brought front and center this season. Max and El's friendship: I just wanted to give them a big old hug. Happy Sigh.
Fourth of July Weekend a group of us American expats (and one Finn) gathered together and rented a cabin about an hour and a half outside of Helsinki. The cabin had an old fashioned wood Sauna, an even older fashioned wood burning hot tub (this was my favorite thing), both situated right by a lake filled with lily pads. The Cabin was incredibly idyllic. I had a ton of fun saunaing then jumping in the lake, getting out and hot tubing, then jumping back in the lake, repeat. If we are still in Finland next summer then I will have to do this again. Maybe for a week next time.
Now you're all caught up on my life! Time to get back to revising my novel! Stranger Things has motivated me. Cheers.
