Morning Routine

My morning routines for writing have to be the same everyday or I don't have the motivation to make myself write. Having a routine is so important for you. It makes writing into a habit and helps your self motivation. I found that human beings crave routine. It helps you feel like you're in control, it gives you a purpose, and it really helps reduce the anxiety of feeling overwhelmed with all of the work you have to do. I always had the same routine for my students at the beginning of class when I was a teacher. I'd learned very quickly that if I changed my routine the class would erupt into chaos! I'd lose control of things very fast and the day wouldn't be productive to learning.
So here is my daily routine for writing:
I wake up, take my dog out and we go to the park. This is usually where I start thinking about the day of work ahead of me, and where I sit on my phone and scroll reddit. Then I get back to my apartment. Nynaeve, my dog, does her own thing like napping or looking out the window for squirrels or fallowing me around the apartment for pats. I make coffee, and while I wait I usually listen to a WritingExcuses podcast or another writing podcast or I'm on the writing subreddit. This usually helps me get into the thought process of writing for the day. It helps me to know that other people are struggling with self motivation just as much as I do. I drink my coffee. Open up my word document. Get on my trello, where all my outlines are, and pick the current outline for my WIP. Then I find music, usually based on my mood or which story i'm working on, for background ambiance. The music is really what does it. With the power of my routine combined I'm now in the head space to write. I'll usually write till two in the afternoon and take a break or be finished for the day. Sometimes it's 1 o'clock because I go to the gym with a friend. The afternoons are when I get other things done like chores and errands and gym (which is also a hard motivator), and TV. I like to reward myself with TV after I write.  So there you have it! Hope this helps.
