Favorite Horror Movies
As a fan of everything horror, I was pegged a question recently at a party: What are you're top ten favorite horror movies? I was struck dumb. I love horror movies, but how could I pick ten? Would I have to put them in order of when I watched them? This is not a question that I could answer right then! It was a really hard question! I found myself listing movies that were awesome, but where they my favorite? Or worse, am I just too desensitized to even think that some of those movies could even be considered horror? Like Alien? Is that horror or action (well I believe its both, but still)? Would I have to pick a movie from each horror sub-genre? How could I just pick ten!? This question is like asking a writer or English major, or avid reader what their top ten favorite novels are. I mean it's so hard. I couldn't give my horror acquaintance an answer then. However, now I've had time to think about it. So here are my top ten favorite horror movies:
1. The Thing (the body horror, the suspense, the isolation, the creature, the unreliable fear induced anxiety!)
2. Alien (isolation in space, creepy eggs, suspense, rare creature showings, rouge AI agenda, this movie has everything! Save the cat!)
3. Dawn of the Dead (2004; I was this in high school and at the time couldn't sleep with first coming up with my apocalypse plan of escape).
4. Train to Busan (zombies on a train, great character development, anxiety induced moments in which I have no idea how that little girl keeps surviving, but that's what makes this movie awesome)
5. I am A Hero (Ahh, you have to watch this! It's a masterpiece in zombie movies. Hero is my favorite protagonist and he has such a great character arch.)
6. Paranormal Activity (my husband and I have a humitafier in our bedroom. A couple of nights after I re-watched this movie, the humitafier began gurgling, but to my half-awake brain it sounded like footsteps running on the wooden floor. I began having flash shivers. So scary! Why why why, but also, so good!)
7. The Evil Dead (The 1981 movie. I also dig the remake...but you can't beat the original.)
8. It Follows (I had nightmares for a week straight, could stop thinking about this movie.)
9. Let The Right One In (I re-watched this while living here in Finland, where the darkness last for months...and I've been to Sweden, they made a masterpiece out of this movie.)
10. The Fly (I'm a sucker for body horror.)
There are so many other movies I wanted to put on here that I left off, and debated on a few to put on my top ten. But then I ask myself which ones would I talk about the most or think about the most. I also have a huge obsession with zombie movies...which shows.
Movies that almost made the top ten and I think shouldn't be left out: The Conjuring: absolutely terrifying and some of the best build up and jump scares in a movie, the suspense is amazing; 28 Days Later: Ahhh another early high school zombie movie, but freaked me out to no in! Especially begin a woman at the end, WTF; Get Out: but I feel like this is more of a sociological thriller, than horror, but still made me very uncomfortable!; Poltergeist (1982): so good, I remember watching this as a kid and being terrified for life! The Ring: yes, I love this movie. I first saw this when I was in 8th grade when it came out in theater; Antichrist: Holy f*cking sh*t! That's all I have to say; The Exorcist: It's one of the best horror movies of all time; Dead Silence: scared me to no end. Ventriloquist dummy's should never had been made, end of discussion; The Crazies! I mean super fun, totally into any type of zombie movie; Silent Hill: I remember when this video game came out. I was in 6th grade and scared shitless, and then they made a movie!; There are so so so many more movies that I wish to talk about or have fun nostalgic memories of. Hush: 2016. A great slasher film. It built on so many fear's, as woman being on her own, being play with, being away from people that could help, the feeling of isolation. This movie caused me so much anxiety, which was thrilling to the point of cathartic. Maybe I'll do a post about just cool or fun horror movies to watch, later.
Okay okay let just be honest this will be my top 21 list.
